Silver Smarties is easy to run and offers the PTA a great return. Give parents, children and anyone else who would like to be involved a tube of Smarties and ask them to return it filled with 20p pieces.
Maximise your fundraising potential by purchasing packs of Smarties in bulk from a wholesaler such as Booker or finding offers in supermarkets.
Allow participants several weeks to fill up their tubes and set a deadline to return them to you. Send out regular reminders by letter, email and social media to avoid any empty tubes ending up in the bin.
Engage the children by encouraging them to complete tasks, chores, or activities to earn 20p from friends and family. This teaches them the value of work and helps them experience how it feels to give away your hard-earned cash.
Make your challenge inclusive by rewarding the class that collects the most boxes, regardless of the value of the contents. Not everyone can afford to give their children money for the PTA.
A tube of Smarties filled with 20p coins equals £12. So thirty supporters filling their tubes would generate over £340 in profit.
For a healthier alternative, opt for Fund Raisin, where you give the pupils a box of raisins instead.
Poem publicity
To capture the attention of the children, write a poem and print onto labels that can be attached to your Smarties tubes. Here’s a general poem you can send out to anyone – adults included.
We’ve given you these Smarties to eat
But the empty tube you must keep
For every task done, earn 20p
It’s up to you to earn your fee
Fill up your tube, right to the top
Return in three weeks for our charity pot!

We’ve given you these Smarties to eat
But the empty tube you must keep
20p pieces are what you must find
Ask friends and family, they won’t mind
Fill up your tube, right to the top
Return in three weeks and we’ll collect the lot!
